Four sent to jail over torture of man, woman
The chief judicial magistrate court in Chuadanga on Friday sent four people involved in the torture of a man and a woman to jail.
The senior judicial magistrate Touhidul Islam passed the order after police produced the four before jail.
The arrested are Sadek Ali, Kalam Hossain, Polash Ali and Monwar Hossain of Goalbari village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga. They were involved in the torture incident in Goalbari village in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Wednesday night.
According to a case filed by Beauty Khatun, 24, one of the victims, one Hasan Ali, 40, son of Delwar Hossain of the same village came to her house to look for her day labourer husband Sentu at about 8:00pm on Wednesday. Her husband had gone to an Islami Jalsha at a nearby village at the time.
Khatun, who has no children, was alone at home. She was talking to Hasan and the door of her house was left open. She alleged that at one stage, neighbours Sadek Ali, Kalam Hossain, Polash Ali and Monwar Hossain suddenly arrived at her house and started to verbally abuse her as to why she was alone with Hasan.
The four locked the house door from outside and raised a hue and cry. When other villagers rushed to the spot the four men told them Khatun has an 'illicit relation' with Hasan and they had been caught red handed.
Victim further said the four men dragged her out of the house along with Hasan at around 9:30pm, tied them both to a tree and started assaulting them. After two hours of physical torture, the perpetrators locked them in the house again at around 11:00 pm and called for an arbitrary (salish) by village elders.
By this time word reached Sentu who informed the matter to police. Police rushed to the village shortly after and rescued the woman and Hasan from the house.
Later, police arrested the four Thursday noon.
Hasan Ali told Chuadanga journalists that he had a previous feud with Kalam and Polash over social matters. He suspected they arranged the whole situation to punish him.
