Five get death for killing expatriate in Ctg
A Chittagong court yesterday handed down capital punishment on five persons, for killing US expatriate Nurul Alam and robbing his house in the port city in 2011.
The court of Additional District Session Judge-5 Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury, issued the verdict after examining all witnesses and records, said Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Miladul Amin Milad.
The convicts are Mujibur Rahman, Md Monir, Juel Barua, Bablu Barua and Sanjib Bonik. Of them, Juel was present before the court, while four others are absconding, APP said.
Nurul Alam, an US expatriate, was killed in his own residence in the port city on 2011 during a vacation in Bangladesh. The house was also robbed after the murder.
Following the incident, a relative of the victim filed a case with Bayezid Police Station in this connection.
Police first detained Mujibur Rahman, also the caretaker of the building, and arrested two others based on his statements. The trio confessed to the crimes under section 164 of the Penal Code and said a robbery was planned to make up for a loss that they suffered in a business venture.
Police submitted the charge-sheet implicating the five in 2012 following which court pressed charges against them in 2013.
Meanwhile, Mujib and Bablu went into hiding after securing bail from the High Court.
