Fellows demand review of decision
Protesting the recommendation for suspension of two Jahangirnagar University students by the institution's disciplinary committee for "verbally abusing" two female teachers, around 300 students yesterday demanded review of the decision.
The protesting students formed a human chain on "Amar Ekushey" premises, and later brought out a silent procession under the banner of "Students of law and justice department" around 11:30am on the campus.
Their demands include forming an impartial probe body and taking time to take a decision instead of rushing in for a solution.
Later, at noon, students of the department and of AFM Kamal Uddin hall submitted two separate memorandums to Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam demanding the review of the suspension recommendation.
JU VC said, “We have not taken any final decision yet. The disciplinary committee has recommended suspension of the students. The next course of action will be taken at the syndicate meeting.”
No unfair decision will be taken in this regard, the VC assured.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra Union of the university unit yesterday issued a press release demanding the review of the suspension recommendation.
On Monday, JU disciplinary committee recommended suspension of the two students for "verbally abusing" two female teachers.
The alleged students are Armanul Islam Khan, a fourth-year student of law and justice department, and Nur Uddin Md Sanaul, a master's student of economics department and also the organising secretary of JU BCL unit.
The recommendations came after two female teachers of geography and environment department filed a written complaint with the university proctor against the students on Friday.
In the complaint, the teachers said they were waiting for some students at Bottola on the campus around 1:15pm after parking their car beside the road.
The fourth-year student, who was standing beside the teachers, started rebuking the driver for parking the car there.
When the teachers protested the incident, he started "verbally abusing" them. Later, the master's student joined him and also started hurling abuse at them.
On the other hand, the students also filed a complaint with the university authorities the same day alleging that the teachers -- Ummeh Saika, associate professor, and Nahreen Islam Khan, assistant professor -- had “abused and threatened” them.
One of the students said, “We just protested why they had parked the car in the middle of the road. They [teachers] became angry and started scolding us.”
