Father held knife to my, mother's throats
The former husband of a Rajshahi University teacher who apparently committed suicide on September 9 had once allegedly tried to kill her by holding a knife to her throat and in another incident did the same to their only son.
Ayman Swaad Ahmad stated this in a Facebook post on Monday night while explaining the note his mother Akter Jahan Joly left in the room police broke in to find the body inside her Juberi Bhaban campus quarters.
Joly had written that in no way should Tanvir Ahmad, a mass communication and journalism department colleague she had a divorce with two years ago, be given custody of Ayman, explaining that she feared for Ayman's life. “A father who can hold a knife to the throat of his child can anytime kill or force the child to commit suicide,” she said.
In a Facebook chat with this correspondent, Ayman stated that the knife incident involving him occurred around May/June this year during an altercation when he protested Tanvir's bar on him talking to Joly and going to a girlfriend's house with her.
“Kill me if you want. You tried to kill mother right in front of me. Surely you will be able to do this,” he stated to have said to Tanvir. However, he failed to recall details of the incident involving his mother, saying all he remembered was Tanvir holding a knife to Joly's throat.
Police are yet to contact Ayman although Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Amir Jafar said police had talks with over 15 of the deceased associate professor's colleagues, friends, family members and neighbours.
Jafar, investigating the death, said information has been gathered on Tanvir's “suspected role in the suicide” and more time was needed as reports of the postmortem, viscera examination and handwriting experts were yet to reach them.
Joly's brother Kamrul Hasan Ratan in a case filed with Motihar Police Station on September 10 stated that Joly's note clearly indicated that someone forced her, either directly or indirectly, to commit suicide. In the note, Joly stated that she committed suicide for “mental and physical pressure”. Several of her colleagues informed that Tanvir had remarried, with another colleague.
Tanvir was withdrawn from all academic activities on September 22 following his proposal and his colleagues stating to have no confidence on him and accusing him of continuing to torture her after the divorce.
Tanvir did not receive phone calls for comment. However in a Facebook post, he has expressed grief and said his love for his son was being questioned.
