EC busy fulfilling govt desires: Rizvi
The Election Commission is busy fulfilling the desires of the government, said BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed yesterday.
He was addressing a press conference at Malopara BNP office in Rajshahi city ahead of re-election to 51 polling stations under 20 municipalities to be held on Tuesday.
“The government is destabilising the country by orchestrating violence. They are rejoicing over the victory in the municipal elections and the election commission is beating drums in triumph,” alleged Rizvi.
“We participated in the elections for 'finding some space in democracy' although we know that the Election Commission is unable to hold a fair election,” he said. He further alleged that "pro-government forces" were threatening the BNP mayoral candidate of Chowmuhuni municipality in Noakhali. The candidate even is not being allowed to conduct campaign before the election, he added.
Narsingdi municipality mayor aspirant is also facing the same situation, he said. “Ignoring its constitutional responsibility, the Election Commission is following orders of the government.” He demanded action to stop pre-election violence in the municipalities.
