A Dhaka University student lost both his legs as a train ran him over near Shahid M Monsur Ali Railway Station in Sirajganj yesterday.

Shafikul Islam Shanto, 22, a second-year student of mathematics, was supposed to board a Dhaka-bound train scheduled to leave the station at 7:00am, said railway police.

Shanto was one or two minutes late when the train started moving. As he tried to get on it hurriedly, he slipped and fell on the tracks, said Sirajganj Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sayed Iqbal.

Shanto's legs got severed from below his knees, said the OC. Locals came to his rescue and took him to Sirajganj General Hospital where he was given primary treatment. He was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Son of Sajahan Ali Master, Shanto was supposed to return to Dhaka from his native village of Boro-Chakli in Sirajganj Sadar upazila, said Sayed Iqbal.

“We could not contact the victim's family as they were busy with him,” said the police official.
