Diaz's followers attacked while Dhaka forensic team visits CMC
A team of Dhaka Medical College's (DMC) forensic department yesterday collected "circumstantial evidence" from the residence of deceased Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury, whereas Diaz's followers demonstrated outside demanding proper investigation into the death.
A three-member team led by Dr Sohel Mahmud visited Diaz's residence at 11:00am and stayed there for at least two hours to collect the evidence. Assistant Superintendent of Police of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Wahidur Rahman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, was also present. At that time, followers of Diaz burnt the effigy of BCL CU unit President Tipu and chanted slogans against Tipu and former assistant proctor Anwar Hossain outside the residence.
Diaz, central assistant secretary of BCL and also the former joint secretary of CU unit BCL, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the bedroom of his family's rented house in the university's No-2 Gate area on November 20.
Dr Sohel said that they had visited Diaz's residence to collect more evidence and talked to the family members.
“We visited the room where Diaz's body was found hanging, and collected circumstantial evidence”, he said, adding that they had also talked with the witnesses who were present during the preparation of inquest report.
“We measured the distance from the fan to bed”, he said.
He informed that they would also talk to the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Hathazari who prepared the inquest report, and the CMC doctors who prepared the first autopsy report. When contacted, the UNO said she had yet to be contacted in this regard.
However, expressing her worry, Diaz's mother said they had come to know that the "killers" had "spent money to influence the report".
Meanwhile, the same group of demonstrators, who demonstrated outside Diaz's residence, also demonstrated near forensic department of CMC in Chittagong city when the DMC team was talking to CMC doctors around 4:00pm. Then, a group of BCL activists of CMC unit attacked the demonstrators, leaving two of the protesters injured, said Md Mamun, vice-president of CU unit of BCL.
In another incident at the same time, some rooms of Diaz's followers at the Abdur Rab Hall in the CU campus were vandalised, said Mamun. Contacted, A K M Mainul Haque Miazi, provost of the hall, said he had come to know that three rooms were vandalised. On November 23, the first post mortem report, prepared by the doctors of forensic department of CMC, mentioned that Diaz had committed suicide. But Diaz's friends and family members have been demanding re-post mortem claiming the death as a murder.
On November 24, Diaz's mother lodged a murder case with a Chittagong court accusing 20 people.
Diaz's body was exhumed following the court's order after the IO filed a petition with the court seeking fresh post mortem of the body. The primary report of second autopsy, carried out on December 11 conducted by the doctors at DMC, found bruises on Diaz's body. At that time, they had announced that they would visit the crime scene and prepare the report after getting viscera report.
