Ctg 'Shibir man' injured in 'gunfight' with cops
A "Shibir activist" was injured in a "gunfight" with police in Ananya Residential Area of Chittagong city early yesterday.
Salahuddin Saju of Hazipara in the city was undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital with bullet wounds in his left leg.
Pradip Kumar Dutta, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bayezid Police Station, said they arrested Saju on Saturday allegedly for demanding extortion of Tk 10 lakh from one Zakir Hossain in the name of another Shibir activist Sarwar who is in jail in an arms case.
The OC said Saju and one of his cohorts went to Zakir's residence at Nayarhat in the city on Friday and when Zakir refused to give the duo the extortion, they tried to torch his private car but their attempt was foiled due to rain, he said.
Following his confessional statement, police along with Saju raided Ananya Residential Area to recover arms and ammunition. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Saju's cohorts opened fire on the cops that led to the gunfight, leaving Saju injured, he added. Police recovered one rifle, 15 bullets and two sharp weapons, he said.
