Criticise constructively

President Abdul Hamid yesterday urged journalists to criticise the government in a constructive way based on accurate information so that it can identify its lapses.

He said this while handing over “Bazlur Rahman Memorial Medal 2017” to journalists for their contributions to journalism related to the Liberation War at the capital's Liberation War Museum.

“Media and democracy are complementary to each other. The media highlight opinions and hopes of the people through constructive criticisms… Currently, responsibility of newspapers and electronic media is very significant as they're fully enjoying and exercising their right to expression,” the president said.

“Responsible journalism can help a journalist reach the peak of professional excellence. You can criticise the government; even me. However, it should be kept in mind that it must be based on the proper information so that the criticism can't be one-sided.”

Hamid said constructive criticism can play an important role in making the right decision, he added.

Mentioning his relationship with Bazlur Rahman in the 1970s, he said, “Bazlu Bhai used to write what he believed and never compromised. He was vocal against any conspiracy against the independence and Liberation War.”

“Introducing awards after his [Bazlur Rahman] name… is an excellent effort to show respect to his memory. The initiative will play a significant role in presenting history of the struggle for independence and the Liberation War to the new generation,” he added. Bazlur Rahman, a journalist and husband of Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury, had worked for the daily Sangbad until the last day of his life. The award went to Rita Bhoumick of Daily Jugantor under the print media category and Soma Islam of Channel i under electronic media.
