‘Only CJ will decide on removing sculpture at SC’
Law Minister Anisul Huq today said the chief justice is the sole authority to decide on the sculpture in the Supreme Court premises.
“The Supreme Court premise is under the jurisdiction of the chief justice,” the minister said at a programme. “We (government) were not asked when the sculpture was installed.”
He (chief justice) has to take the decision about removing or keeping it there. So far I have learnt, there are some hesitations about the necessity of the sculpture,” he said.
The law minister said this while talking to reporters after attending an inauguration of a training of judicial officials at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) in Dhaka.
The sculpture was installed in as the symbol of justice in the SC premises in December last year.
The Islamic religious leaders, Hefajat-e Islam, Awami Olama League and Islami Andolan Bangladesh have been demanding the authorities remove the statue from the SC premises.
Even, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 11 reportedly said she did not like setting up the statue of Greek Goddess Themis on the Supreme Court premises.
