UP chairman sued for 'derogatory remarks' on PM

A sedition case was lodged yesterday against Gondamara union parishad (UP) chairman in Banshkhali for making "derogatory remarks" against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Liakot Ali is also a local BNP leader.

Chittagong South District Awami League (AL) leader Abdullah Kabir Liton, also nephew of late AL leader Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu, filed the case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Mainul Islam of Banshkhali, said the complainant's lawyer ARM Toksimul Goni.

“The case was lodged under section 120 (kha), 124 (ka) and 504 of Penal Code while the court ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Banshkhali Police Station to take necessary steps in this regard taking the case into cognisance,” said advocate Toksimul Goni.

The lawyer said Liakot made derogatory remarks against PM and provoking comments against the government while addressing an Iftar party on June 4.

Currently, around 22 cases are under trial against Liakot, he added.

Liakot hit newspaper headlines for his involvement in a clash between locals and police in Gondamara area on April 5, 2016 that killed five persons over establishing a coal-fired power plant.
