Carmichael College: Normalcy after withdrawal of principal, vice-principal

Normalcy has returned to Carmichael College in Rangpur after education ministry on Tuesday withdrew the principal and vice-principal of the college.

Dr Abdul Latif Miah and Abdur Razzak -- principal and vice-principal respectively -- were made officer on special duty (OSD). The tenure of their job will end in August and June this year.

A letter signed by Fatema-tul-Zannat, assistant secretary of education ministry, was faxed to the college on Tuesday, according to the college officials. It is yet to be learnt who will be the next principal.

On February 10, teachers, officials and staff of the college started an indefinite strike demanding removal of Principal Abdul Latif for his alleged corruption, misbehaviour with teachers and officials, and nepotism.

In the wake of the demonstration, a three-member probe body visited the campus on February 19.

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education formulated the probe body led by Prof Abdul Maleque, director (training). Dr Zahangir Hossain, director (planning and development), and Nasir Uddin, deputy director (human resources), were two other members.  They submitted their report to the ministry by the end of February.

Aktaruzzaman Chowdhury, general secretary at Carmichael College Teachers' Welfare Association, said the ministry has taken the decision based on the probe report.

Following a request from the probe body, the teachers cancelled the indefinite strike on February 22, but continued wearing black badges. After the withdrawal of the duo, they stopped the protest.
