Bodies of 2 workers recovered
Bodies of two workers were recovered from the Shitalakhya river under Sreepur upazila of Gazipur yesterday morning, three days after they went missing.
The workers died after a dredger, on which they were working, sank in the river, said police, adding, the divers recovered the bodies from Barami-Kacharpara area.
Sand traders Haji Rafique Munshi and dredger owner Habibur Rahman of Barami area have been arrested in this connection, said Sub-inspector Shahidullah of Sreepur Police Station.
He said Munshi and Habibur had been extracting sand illegally from the river for a long time. At around 2:00am on Monday, during extraction of sand, a dredger with seven workers on board sank, he added.
Five of the workers swam ashore but Sohag, 30, and Rubel, 29, remained missing, he added.
On information, a five-member diver team of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence started a rescue operation. The divers after three days' search recovered the bodies at around 7:00am yesterday, the SI said.
Sohag was son of Abdul Khaleque of Purkadirchar village in Barisal and Rubel was a resident of Bagerhat.
The bodies were sent to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for autopsies.
He said filing of a case was underway.
