Australians asked to rethink need of visiting Bangladesh
Australia yesterday raised the travel alert for its nationals from level 2 (exercise high degree of caution) to level 3 (reconsider your need to travel), citing it had “reliable information to suggest that militants may be planning to target Western interests in Bangladesh”.
It was also for “an increase in terrorist attacks, including against Westerners”, says an advice the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued.
“If you do decide to travel, take additional security measures, register your travel on Smartraveller and monitor the media and other sources about possible security risks,” it adds.
Most western and major Asian countries, including the US, UK, Japan and South Korea, have issued similar travel warnings following the July 1 Gulshan café attack claiming the lives of two police officers and 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners.
Assessing the terrorist threat to be “real and credible”, the US state department similarly updated its travel warning on July 10, authorising the voluntary departure of family members of government personnel posted at its Dhaka embassy.
