Foyzur's brother confesses

A Sylhet court yesterday recorded the confessional statement of the brother of Foyzur Hasan, who carried out a knife attack on Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).

Haridas Kumar, a metropolitan magistrate in Sylhet, recorded the statement of Foyzur's brother Enamul Hasan under section 164, said Shafiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station and investigation officer of the case.

Enamul was later sent to jail, he added.

Amullo Kumar Chowdhury, assistant commissioner (prosecution) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, said Enamul confessed that he and his family knew that Foyzur had become radicalised.

After the attack on Zafar Iqbal, Enamul fled with his brother' mobile phone and tablet computer to cover up his brother's involvement, Amullo told The Daily Star.

On March 3, Foyzur, a suspected Islamist, attacked Prof Iqbal with a knife at the Mukto Mancha on the SUST campus. Caught by students immediately, Foyzur was then beaten up and handed over to the Rapid Action Battalion.

Following that, Enamul fled their house at Sheikhpara in Sylhet city with Foyzur's mobile phone and tablet computer.

On March 8, Enamul was arrested from Gazipur by Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. On March 10, the same court placed him on an 8-day remand.

Foyzur also confessed before the court on March 18.

His father Atiqur Rahman, mother Minara Begum and uncle Fozlur Rahman are in jail after completing different periods of remand. In the case, police arrested Foyzur's aide Shohag Miah, who influenced Foyzur to become radical.
