ASK condemns 'mass arrest'
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) yesterday strongly condemned “mass arrest” across the country ahead of the verdict in a graft case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia today.
A total of 1,786 persons have been arrested in the last eight days, said the rights body citing media reports.
Leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliate bodies are being arrested across the country centering the verdict, ASK said in a press statement, signed by its Executive Director Sheepa Hafiza.
Even though police are saying it is a part of their routine work, their acts are contradicting Article 33 and 36 of the constitution that safeguard a person from arbitrary arrest and detention, and ensure freedom of movement, it added. Such acts will hamper people's normal life and create obstacle in practicing civic rights, it added.
