Arrest warrant for Khaleda part of govt 'evil plot'
BNP yesterday said the arrest warrant against its Chairperson Khaleda Zia issued in a case of violence was a part of the government's “evil plot” to demoralise her.
“As the government fears Khaleda, it is taking various steps to force her to back off from her movement for the restoration of democracy,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed said at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.
A Dhaka court yesterday issued the arrest warrants against 38 BNP leaders, including Khaleda Zia, in a case filed in connection with an arson attack during the party's last year's movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Qamrul Hossain passed the order asking the investigation officer to submit a report by July 18 on execution of the warrants.
“The BNP chief was besieged at her Gulshan office when the incident took place,” Rizvi said, adding, “Her telephone line and power connection were also snapped. So, how did she give the order for the attack?”
Khaleda will not be dispirited by the government's move as millions of people are supporting her, he said.
“You (government) are showing us the fear of going to jail. You also get ready to go there as you're creating the ground for it.”
