AL submits nomination paper for Abdul Hamid
The Awami League yesterday submitted a nomination paper to the Election Commission (EC) on behalf of its presidential election aspirant Abdul Hamid, the incumbent president.
An AL delegation led by the party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader submitted the nomination paper to returning officer and Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda at the latter's office.
If no other nomination paper is received by the EC, the lone candidate will be declared elected unopposed.
The AL on January 31 nominated Abdul Hamid as its candidate to contest the presidential election.
The nomination was finalised by the party's Parliamentary Board at a meeting held at the Gonobhaban with party chief Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
President Hamid was born on January 1, 1944 at Kamalpur in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj.
Hamid, a valiant freedom fighter, was elected in the Pakistan National Assembly of 1970 from Mymensingh-18 constituency. In 1972, he became a Member of Constituent Assembly. He was elected Member of Parliament from Kishoreganj-5 constituency with AL ticket six times -- in the general elections of 1973, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2009.
