7.3m under fives stunted
Although Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable success in alleviating poverty, it is still facing challenges to elevate the nutrition scenario among children, according to findings of a joint survey conducted by Brac and LANSA yesterday.
Around 7.3 million children under five remain stunted while 6.5 million underweight and 2.9 million physically weak, disclosed the findings at a seminar on “Nexus between Agriculture and Nutrition: Bangladesh Case,” in the capital's Brac Centre Inn, said a press release.
Brac's Research and Evaluation Department organised the programme under an international research programme of Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia (LANSA).
“Nutrition problem is extreme in Bangladesh. Forty-five percent of children in haors are stunted. To prevent this situation, Brac initiated a pilot project in 2013 at upzila level,” said Barnali Chakraborty, a senior research fellow of Brac's Research and Evaluation Department.
Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, secretary of the agriculture ministry, was present as the chief guest at the programme.
