72 hearing-impaired children to get free surgery
A total of 72 hearing-impaired children will undergo free surgery for cochlear implant at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the capital.
The Ministry of Social Welfare will pay for the surgeries, Dr Abul Hasnat Joarder, director of the surgery project, said at a programme at BSMMU yesterday.
The programme titled “Cochlear Implant Giving Ceremony” was organised by BSMMU to give special certificates to the children to ensure their surgeries.
A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear (cochlea) and provides sound signals to the brain unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder.
Previously, 152 children underwent the surgery under the same project, speakers said at the programme.
BSMMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan was present among others on the occasion.
