600 buses to hit Dhaka roads by 2017: Minister
The government has taken measures to procure 600 buses including 300 double-decker buses aimed at creating opportunity to travel in mass transport and discouraging usage of private vehicles in Dhaka.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this in reply to lawmakers’ queries in the parliament today.
In a scripted answer, the minister said of the 600 buses, 300 will be double-decker, 200 will be equipped with air conditioner facility while the rest 100 will be non-AC.
The large type buses will be procured with foreign assistance and are likely to hit the city roads by next year, the minister said in reply to a supplementary question of a lawmaker.
About the government’s plan to reduce traffic jam in the capital, Quader said the government has taken move to construct 91 killometre long Dhaka circular route with two sections.
Name of one section is Dhaka Circular Road: Eastern Bypass (Demra- Purbachal Sarak- Termukh) which will be 24 km in length.
Name of the other section is Dhaka Circular Road: (Termukh- Abdullahpur- Dhour- Birulia-Gabtoli- Babubazar- Sadarghat- Fatulla- Chashara- Signboard- Shimrail- Demra). Length of this section will be 67 kilometre .
