Gazipur Bar Association bombing: 6 militants’ deaths upheld
The High Court today upheld the death sentence of six militants in a case filed over a suicide attack inside Gazipur Bar Association office in 2005 that killed nine people and injured scores others.
However, the court commuted death sentence of two accused militants to life imprisonment and acquitted two others.
The convicts whose death sentences were confirmed are: Enayet Ullah alias Walid, Arifur Rahman, Saidur Munshi, Abdullah Al Sohaien, Nizam Uddin Reza and Taibur Rahman alias Hassan.
The death sentence Moshidul Islam alias Masud and Adnan Sami alias Jahangir have been commuted to life term imprisonment.
The acquitted persons are Ashraful Islam and Md Shafiullah alias Tarek.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JBM Hassan came up with the verdict after hearing the death reference and appeal filed by the accused challenging the lower court verdict.
On November 29, 2005, suicide bomber Nazir Hossain, also known as Shariat Ullah, of Gaibandha, walked into the office on the ground floor of the Hall Building-2 at Bhawal Rajbari court and detonated the bomb strapped to his body. The bombing was apparently a part of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh's attack on the judiciary.
On June 20, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 10 members of JMB to death for carrying out the attack.
