Four people were killed and over 100 dwelling houses were damaged as a nor'wester lashed nine upazilas of Rajshahi yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, two women were killed in lightning at Shibganj in Chapainawabganj this evening.

Meanwhile, five people went on missing as a boat capsized in the Padma river during the storm yesterday, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.

The deceased are Faridul Islam, 48, son of Azizul Islam of Sapura area of Boalia Police Station in the city, Munsur Rahman, 40, son of Harun-or-Rashid, 40, of Belghoaria in the city, Achhia Begum, 45, wife of Ansar Ali of Shyampur village in Charghat upazila, and Alam Ali Munshi, 50, son of Ataur Munshi of Kalabagan area in Godagari upazila.

Ward Master of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) Mosharraf Hossain said Achhia, Munsur and Faridul succumbed to their wounds at the hospital.

Achhia was injured as a tree branch fell on her while Munsur sustained injuries after he fell on the road while running during the storm and Faridul was struck by a thunderbolt.

Alam was injured as a tree branch collapsed on his head during the storm, Hifzul Alam Munshi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Godagari Police Station, said. He later died at the upazila health complex, the OC added.

Besides, the storm damaged crops on a vast track of lanad and uprooted trees in the nine upazilas.

Lightning kills 2 in Chapainawabganj

The two victims of lightning are: Masuma Begum, 26, wife of Abdur Rashid of Airamari village and Chhobi Begum, 30, wife of Rup Chand of Chak Doulatpur.

The incident took place around 5:45pm this evening, said Habibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station

5 missing in Padma boat capsize

The boat capsized while it was carrying six people to the Rajshahi city's Shahmakhdum from a char area around 7:00pm.

One of the passengers managed to swim ashore but five others went missing since then, according to fire fighters.

Divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Rajshahi are searching for them in the river since this morning.
