4 jailed for repackaging expired food

A Rab-10 mobile court yesterday sentenced four persons to jail for two years each, for selling and storing expired food items at Lalbagh in Old Dhaka.

Some 1,100 sacks full of powdered milk, noodles and chips were also seized from six warehouses of three businesses. The warehouses were also sealed.

The products imported from Malaysia and Thailand had their expiry date two years back, and was being repackaged with new expiry dates, said executive magistrate Sarwoer Alam, who led the drive at around 1:00am. The products were priced at around 55 lakh taka, he said.

All four sentenced are owners of the warehouses, and this is the highest punishment under the jurisdiction of the mobile court, said Sarwoer.

The seized goods were destroyed later in the day in the capital's Matuail.
