28 univ students among 32 arrested in Dhaka
A total of 32 youths including 28 students of two private universities were sentenced to different jail terms in an anti-narcotics drive in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential area on Sunday.
A team of Rab-1, led by Executive Magistrate Sarwoer Alam, conducted the raid at an under-construction building at block-B of road 9 around 4:00pm. The drive ended around 9:00pm.
“At first, 54 were detained. After scrutiny, 32 youths including four girls were sentenced to jail while the rest were released,” Sarwoer Alam told The Daily Star.
Of the 32, 24 were jailed for seven days while seven were jailed for six months and another one was jailed for nine months, he added.
Beside the students, the four others were drug peddlers, he claimed.
Around 4.5kg of cannabis and 50 pieces of yaba pills were seized from them, the magistrate said.
In separate drives by Dhaka Metropolitan Police, 130 people were arrested on suspect of peddling and taking drugs from different areas in the capital in last two days.
Around 5,900 yaba pills, 1.8kg heroin, around 6.2kg cannabis, 17 bottles of Phensedyl, 12 bottles of foreign liquor, 27 litres of locally-made alcohol and 22 injections were seized from their possessions, according to DMP news portal.
