2 mayoral candidates in Rajshahi, Barisal withdraw nominations
No mayoral candidate in Sylhet City Corporation polls withdrew nomination yesterday, last day for withdrawal, allowing all seven candidates to go for a tough contest in the polls scheduled for July 30.
In Rajshahi and Barisal, however, two mayoral candidates withdrew their nominations from the city corporation polls.
In the three city corporation polls, a total of 33 councillor candidates -- 19 in Barisal, eight in Rajshahi and six in Sylhet -- including two female (reserved) candidates, have withdrawn their nominations.
SYLHET
The mayoral candidates are: immediate past mayor and BNP candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury, two times former mayor and AL candidate Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, BNP rebel candidate Badruzzaman Selim, Jamaat-e-Islami-backed independent candidate Ehsanul Mahbub Jubayer, CPB-BASOD-backed candidate Abu Jafor, Islami Andolon Bangladesh-backed candidate Dr Moazzem Hossain and independent candidate Ehsanul Haque Taher.
Apart from the mayoral candidates, 127 general councillor candidates and 62 female reserved councillor candidates will be contesting, said Uttam Kumar Roy, assistant returning officer of Sylhet City Polls.
RAJSHAHI
The Jatiya Party-nominated mayoral candidate Washiur Rahman Dolon withdrew his nomination in Rajshahi yesterday, expressing his support for the AL nominated candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton.
The other mayor aspirants include BNP's Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Gono Shanghati Andolon's Rajshahi coordinator Murad Morshed, Bangladesh Jatiya Party's Habibur Rahman, and Shafikul Islam from Islami Andolon Bangladesh.
Five mayoral aspirants and 212 councillor candidates will contest the Rajshahi City Corporation polls.
BARISAL
One mayor, 17 councillor and two female (reserved) candidates withdrew their nominations from the Barisal city polls.
Khelafat Majlish candidate AKM Mahabub Alom withdrew his candidature in support of the 20-party-led candidate Mojibor Rahaman Sorwar.
Mujibur Rahman, returning officer of Barisal City Corporation polls, said nominations for six mayoral candidates, 94 general councillor candidates and 35 female councillors (reserved) for Barisal city polls are final, but it would be announced on July 10.
