150 shanties gutted in Dhaka slum fire

At least 150 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out in a slum of Dhaka's Mohammadpur early today. No casualties were reported.

The fire broke out in the Banshbari slum near Shia Mosque around 4:00am, Jamaluddin Mir, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur Police Station, told The Daily Star.

On information, 13 firefighting units rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire around 5:25am, an official of the Fire Service and Civil Defence said.

The fire originated from a shanty, but the cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately, Tarekuzzaman Rajib, local ward commissioner, told The Daily Star.

Dhaka North City Corporation has made a list of 221 affected families and will distribute 30kg rice and Tk 3,000 per family as aid.

Locals alleged that around 250 shanties were burnt in the fire and alleged the fire was a sabotage.
