Some 1,000 resident students of Dhaka University will get a copy of The Daily Star each, free of cost, at their dormitories for the next one year.

Since 2012, The Daily Star with the support of Mutual Trust Bank Ltd has been serving free copies of the country's largest English daily to select DU resident students, chosen every year on the basis of merit and their family's economic background.

Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star; Anis A Khan, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of Mutual Trust Bank; and Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman, vice chancellor of DU; launched this year's programme at an event titled “Promoting Knowledge Season 7”, at the auditorium of Institute of Modern Languages (IML) of DU yesterday.

Commending the initiative, Akhtaruzzaman said students will be benefitted from the information in the newspaper.

He called on students to not engage in any activities that disrupt regular academic function of the university. “Don't pay heed to rumours that create anarchy at the university. I hope you'll practice objectivity,” he added.

Mutual Trust Bank Managing Director Anis A Khan said alongside Bangla, students should learn English to progress in life.

“Reading The Daily Star will help you learn the English language as well as enhance your knowledge,” he said.

Addressing the students, Mahfuz Anam said, “You are passing the best time of your life… Be creative and utilise this time to build your future.”

Among others, Prof Dr Shishir Bhattacharjee, director of Institute of Modern Languages (IML) at DU,  addressed the programme.
