10 teens arrested on murder charge

Detectives of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday arrested 10 youths who they claimed were muggers, aged between 15 and 16, on charge of killing a youth in port city's Halishahar area on Tuesday night.

They were arrested from different areas in Halishahar, said Amena Begum, additional commissioner (crime and operation) of CMP, at a press conference at CMP Headquarters.

During the drive, police seized two stolen mobile phones and a blood-stained knife from their possession, she said.

On Tuesday, Md Sumon, 18, a mechanic, was killed after a gang of 10 to 12 muggers stabbed him and his friend in Artillery Road area. Sumon was declared dead at a hospital.

“All the criminals are young and they used to mug people in guise of hanging out on streets at night,” said the police official, adding that most of them were from underprivileged backgrounds.

“We were able to trace them by tracking Sumon's stolen mobile phone,” said the additional commissioner.

She added, “Parents should keep track of their children. They should not allow children to go outside after 9:00pm. Police will pick them up if anyone is found outside at night without any specific reason and call their parents to the police station.”

She said police have already started drives in this regard.

The teenagers were shown arrested in connection with Sumon murder case, filed with Halishahar Police Station.
