10 held over double murder in Sylhet
Ten people were arrested in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet hours after an arbitrator allegedly shot dead two youths during a clash over land dispute on Saturday. Jamal Ahmed, son of a former pro-Awami Leauge union chairman of Salutikor, fired random shots from his licenced two-barrel shotgun during a clash that ensued between his followers and the villagers of Mitrimahal following village arbitration, said police. Jamal, of Bahar village, and one Mokbul Hossain, of Mitrimahal village, had been at loggerheads over the ownership of some land on Salutikor mosque premises. Influential locals, including Jamal, arranged the arbitration to settle the rivalry. Police recovered the gun from the spot on Saturday. All the 10 arrestees are followers of Jamal, said Goainghat police, adding that Jamal was absconding. The bodies of Ali Ahmed and Rumel Ahmed were handed over to their families in Mitrimahal village after autopsies.
