Child marriage registrar caught red-handed
A fake marriage registrar was exposed when he went to register a child marriage in Noarpara union of Islampur upazila in Jamalpur on Wednesday but was lucky enough to evade arrest.
Abul Kashem, 45, of Ulia village, often conducts child marriages by hiring the marriage registry book of Abul Khair Abdun Noor, marriage registrar of Shapdhori union, complained Bodiuzzaman, authorised marriage registrar of Noarpara.
Badiuazzamn last year submitted a complaint to the district registrar while lodged another with the SP in this month. Kashem takes money from the parents and thus the number of child marriages is increasing in the region, Badiuzzaman claimed.
On Wednesday, Moshiur Rahman Badal, Noarpara union parishad chairman, with the help of locals foiled the marriage of a 13-year-old girl with a 17-year-old boy and seized Kashem's registry book. When asked why Kashem was not handed over to police, Badal said Kashem promised that he will stop all these.
District registrar Abu Taleb recently ordered his officials to probe and take necessary action accordingly.
When contacted, Kashem said, “I run a grocery shop. I just help Noor by administering prayers." Noor could not be contacted despite several attempts.
