Students get free laptop under 'One Laptop One Dream’ project
Government plans to establish one vocational institute in each of the seven divisions and provide 1 lakh WiFi hotspots in upazillas in order to connect the grass-root level with digital services and build a skilled workforce. The vocational institutes will develop a technologically skilled workforce while the hotspots will provide free internet service. IT & Telecommunication State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Khan Palak made this announcement while distributing laptops to 50 meritorious but financially challenged Dhaka University students at Sonargaon Hotel on Monday, 18th May. Special Representative of Bangladesh at United Nations Dr. Abdul Momen, South-South Steering Committee for the Sustainable Development's Executive President Francis Lawrence, and special UN delegate for South-South Co-Operation Iping Zhao were among those present.
Under the 'One Student One Laptop' campaign, supported by South-South Education Foundation, 10 students from DU Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and 40 students from Information Technology (IT) Department were provided with a laptop each. It was announced at the ceremony that eventually two thousand students from various public universities will be provided with laptops. Earlier on 3rd May, 250 students received laptops in the first phase of the campaign.
