Rare surgery done at United Hospital

Dr MA Zulkifl, senior consultant of urology department at United Hospital, and his team performed a rare surgery recently, said a press release.  

The patient, a 60-year-old man, was diagnosed with bladder cancer about one month ago. The patient was later referred to Dr Zulkifl.

To save the patient, a decision was made to perform surgery that will remove his entire bladder and prostate.

The rare "Radical Cystoprostatectomy with Orthotopic Neobladder Reconstruction Surgery" was performed. This means, after removal of the bladder, a new bladder was constructed with a segment of the small intestines.

Even after a long surgery on the patient who suffers from other health complications, it was possible to transfer the patient directly to the cabin without ICU stay.

The surgery requires experienced and skilled surgery team support, said Dr Zulkifl. Earlier, patients had to go abroad for availing such surgeries, but now they are being performed in the country with great success.
