Bus torched in Jatrabari
A passenger bus was set on fire at Jatrabari in Dhaka this evening ahead of the Jamaat-e-Islami-sponsored hartal protesting the death penalty of their chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.
The bus, in-bound to Dhaka from Monohardi of Narsingdi, was torched near the Kajla petrol pump around 8:20pm, Aboni Shangkar Kar, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, told The Daily Star.
“No one was injured in the incident,” the OC said in initial reports.
Two fire-fighting units of Fire Service and Civil Defence doused the flames after around forty minutes, said Babul Mia, on-duty operator at the fire service headquarters.
Further details could not be obtained immediately.
A special tribunal today awarded Nizami, a former Al-Badr chief, death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
His party, Jamaat, called for 24-hour hartal tomorrow (Thursday) and 48-hour hartal from Sunday protesting the verdict.
