Buet students go on rampage over road crash injury of peer
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) students yesterday demonstrated at Palashi intersection in the capital after a fellow student sustained injuries in a road accident there.
Anika Farzana, a third year student of architecture department of the university, was injured when a microbus hit a rickshaw carrying her near the Palashi branch of Sonali Bank around 9:00am, said Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station.
She sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
As the news of her accident spread, hundreds of angry students rushed to Palashi intersection and demonstrated there demanding all vehicles which do not belong to Buet authorities, teachers, staff or students be banned from entering the campus.
They also vandalised the microbus and set its seats on fire at the intersection halting traffic at the intersection and nearby areas.
Rickshaws, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and other vehicles were left stranded at the Bakshibazar intersection and Chankher-pool intersection for hours due to the demonstration.
Later around 12:15pm, Prof SM Nazrul Islam, vice-chancellor of Buet, went to the spot and assured the demonstrating students of meeting their demand.
The VC said the university authorities will stop all buses and trucks from entering the university campus and also evict illegal makeshift shops built on footpaths on the campus.
As of filing this report at 6:30pm, all entry points to the campus were closed.
