BNP still sticks to BJP call claim
Reiterating that the information about conversations between the BNP chairperson and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president is cent percent correct, BNP on Saturday evening alleged that a propaganda was been carried out over it only to divert people’s attention to a different direction.
“In the wake of some media’s continued efforts to prove my information about the telephone conversation wrong, I want to reiterate firmly that the information given by me is hundred percent correct,” BNP chairperson’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan said in a statement this evening.
He claimed that the telephone conversation between the chiefs of two major parties of the two neighboring countries took place in his presence.
Maruf, however, in the press note said that he did not want to raise any question about the motive and honesty of those media trying to prove his information incorrect.
“I also don’t want to raise any question whether the BJP chief has given interview to those media or not.”
Maruf also claimed as per the information they gathered from those close to BJP chief Amit Saha there was no scope for the BJP chief to give interview to any Bangladeshi media as he was very busy in electioneering and collecting members for his party.
The BNP chief’s press secretary hoped that all will refrain from diverting people’s attention to a different direction from the country’s persisting serious issues by turning a simple issue into a complicated one.
He also hoped that the controversy over the conversation between the two leaders will end through his statement.
On Thursday evening, Maruf at a press conference said Amit Shah called Khaleda at 10:30pm on Wednesday, inquired about her physical condition and prayed for her quick recovery.
Media outlets, both Indian and Bangladeshi, picked the story.
Amid broiling controversy and counter claims by rival blocs on whether chief of Indian ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called the BNP chairperson over phone, BJP chief Amit Shah today cleared the cloud, terming the news false.
“No. No. This is a fake news. I have no any contact outside,” Amit Shah told private television channel Ekattor while replying to a question if he hand telephone conversation with BNP chief Khaleda Zia.
But Ekattor TV, quoting a highly placed diplomatic source, earlier yesterday reported that no such telephone conversation took place between Amit and Khaleda.
The TV report further said a phone call was made to the BJP leader from Khaleda Zia's office, but no conversation could be held due to problems in the telephone line.
Later in the day, the ruling Awami League at an emergency press briefing at the party chief's Dhanmondi office said the story of the phone call was made up by the BNP.
