BNP calls hartal in 8 upazilas for tomorrow
BNP has announced daylong hartal (shutdown) for tomorrow in eight upazilas of six districts protesting vote rigging by ruling party "armed cadres" and attack on BNP-backed candidates and their supporters.
The upazilas are Meherpur Sadar; Bakerganj and Gournadi upazilas of Barisal; Jhenidah Sadar; Shailakupa and Sujanagar upazilas of Pabna; Sonatola upazila of Bogra and Kazipur of Sirajganj district.
BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office announced the shutdown on behalf on the local BNP units around 4:30pm.
During the briefing, Rizvi claimed that armed cadres of Awami League-backed candidate at Meherpur Sadar Upazila seized all voting centres.
He also said ruling party cadres carried out attacks on BNP backed candidates in Bakerganj and Gournadi upazilas in Barisal.
Rizvi alleged that under the favour of a minister, ruling party men seized at least 16 poll centres in Gosaibari upazila of Shariatpur. Rizvi however did not mention the name of the minister.
