Birdem security beefed up as normalcy returns
Birdem General Hospital today beefed up its security after demands from the doctors, who had observed work abstention on Tuesday and Wednesday protesting the alleged assault on three of their colleagues by relatives of a patient who died on Sunday.
Normalcy retuned to hospital as its doctors went back to work this morning after a two-day work abstention.
The physicians, who were protesting an assault on their three colleagues by the relatives of a patient who died on Sunday, joined their work around 8:00am, Dr Tanjina Hossain, a doctor of endocrinology department, told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, professor Dr Nazmunnahar, director general of the hospital, said, “We have formed 12 teams each comprising six to seven security men. They will round the whole hospital every two hours.”
Also, the hospital gates would be closed at night starting from 10:00pm, except for ambulance and doctors, Nazmunnahar said.
However, around 200 doctors formed a human chain at Shahbagh for an hour since 11:30am later demanding their security at workplace. Later, they also held a rally there.
Traffic movement on the road remained normal as the doctors held their programmes beside the road.
Earlier in the morning, the administration urged the physicians not to hold any protest programme today but the doctors did not responded to the call, an administrative official said.
Hundreds of patients were seen receiving treatment at different departments of the hospital since morning.
The doctors decided to resume work today after the withdrawal of Additional Superintendent of Police of Dhaka district ABM Masud Hossain, who allegedly had instigated the assault on three doctors following the death of the patient.
Meanwhile, Farhana Nasrinn, daughter of Sirajul Islam, 57, who died on Sunday, at a press conference yesterday urged the Prime Minister’s intervention in trying the doctors, whose alleged negligence led to the death of her father.
She said they went to Shahbagh Police Station on Tuesday night, but police did not accept case.
“So, where shall we get justice for the killing of my father?” she posed a question at the press conference at the National Press Club Thursday afternoon.
Nasrin said she has lost both her father and mother. “Like the Prime Minister, I am also an orphan. I hope that she will understand my pain.”
