BGB deployed in country
Authorities this evening deployed paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at different parts of the country including Dhaka to ward off violence centring the pronouncement of the war crimes trial verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami tomorrow.
The paramilitary forces were deployed at 7:00pm, a BGB official told The Daily Star.
A tribunal in Dhaka today fixed tomorrow (Wednesday) for delivering the long-awaited judgement in the war crimes case against Nizami four months after the deferment of the verdict.
DMP foolproof security in place over Nizami verdict
Meanwhile, UNB adds: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken foolproof security measures in the capital over the verdict.
Adequate uniformed and plainclothes police will remain on high alert, deployed around the ICT-1 and elsewhere in the capital to avert any untoward incident following the verdict, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of DMP Masudur Rahman told UNB.
Additional police will be deployed at different key points of the city from early morning as part of the DMP’s security blanket in the capital on Wednesday, he said.
Earlier, this morning, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan said the government has taken necessary preparations to prevent any anarchic situation in the country over the verdict on Jamaat leader Nizami.
He said stern action will taken if anyone tries to create anarchy over the verdict.
The 71-year-old former lawmaker and minister is facing 16 war crimes charges for his alleged involvement in the crimes against humanity and genocide during 1971 war.
With the latest order, the tribunal kept the case waiting for verdict delivery for the third time.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 was scheduled to deliver the verdict on June 24 but the court deferred the judgement as Nizami was not produced in the courtroom “due to illness”.
After fixing the fresh date for delivering the verdict, The ICT-1 headed by its chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim ordered the jail authorities to produce Nizami before the court by 10:30am tomorrow, reports our correspondent from the court.
