BGB deployed across the country
The Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed across the country ahead of the 72-hour hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the death sentence of its chief Motiur Rahman Nizami.
The authorities this evening deployed the paramilitary force BGB at different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka to avoid violence or possible anarchy on the streets in the name of hartal.
The forces were deployed around 7:00pm, a BGB official told The Daily Star this evening.
The hartal will be effective from 6:00am tomorrow (Thursday) until 6:00am Friday.
The next phase of hartal will begin from 6:00am on Sunday and will continue for 48 hours until 6:00am on Tuesday.
The separate spells of hartal divided by weekends will virtually put the country under a six-day ‘vacation’ from tomorrow morning.
The hartal was called about half-an-hour after the International Crimes Tribunal awarded death penalty to Nizami for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
