BB serves notice on Sonali MD
Bangladesh Bank yesterday served a notice on the managing director of state-owned Sonali Bank asking him to explain why punitive action will not be taken against him for negligence in providing security to the vaults of the bank branches.
The MD will have to give a reply by March 16. If the reply is not satisfactory, action will be taken as per law, the BB said in the notice.
The central bank said robbers made away with Tk 16.4 crore from a Sonali Bank branch in Kishoreganj by digging a tunnel into the bank's vault on January 24.
After the heist, the BB asked the bank to beef up security of its vaults.
Yet in another burglary, around Tk 30.8 lakh was taken away from the bank's Adamdighi branch in Bogra on Saturday, applying the same technique.
It was a proof of negligence in management and irresponsible behaviour, the central bank told the MD.
Sonali Bank has already suspended a number of officials as per a directive of the Banking Division. A three-member team led by a deputy managing director of the bank is now investigating the incident in Bogra.
The Banking Division has also formed a six-member committee headed by its Additional Secretary Amalendu Mukherjee.
The committee will suggest measures to ensure safety of the vaults of state owned banks.
