Barisal AL, BNP join hands for peaceful coexistence
Leaders and activists of the major political parties including the Awami League and its archrival the BNP yesterday joined a procession in Barisal city with a call for peaceful coexistence of disparate ideologies for the country's development.
With the theme, "Let's not fight, let's build a Bangladesh based on unity", the programme was organised by the Political Fellow Alumni Association, a body of political activists trained in proper democratic practices and norms, by Democracy International (DI) and the International Foundation for Election System ( IFES).
About a hundred people, including NGO activists and students, paraded different streets starting from Ashwini Kumar Hall before coming back to the place to hold a rally there, marking International Day of Peace, which is observed on September 21.
The event was attended by Talukdar Md Yunus, lawmaker and general secretary of the district AL; Afzalul Karim, city AL secretary; Kamrul Ahsan Shahin, city BNP secretary; AKM Murtaza Abedin, Barisal City Corporation councillor and a Jatiya Party (Ershad) leader; and Bashir Ahmed Jhunu, member secretary of the city JP (Ershad).
Speaking on the occasion, DI regional coordinator Dipu Hafijur Rahman said the programme aimed at promoting healthy democratic practices in the country. He said the Political Fellow Alumni Association was helping make positive changes in society through organising regular dialogues between rival political parties to ensure sustainable democracy.
