Yaba Case: Policeman held in Ctg

A police constable was arrested yesterday in a case filed over the seizure of 3,000 yaba tablets in the port city a few days ago.

The arrestee, Kamruzzaman, 35, has been suspended, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operation) Amena Begam.

He was posted at the police lines of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, reports our Chittagong correspondent, quoting police.

Wishing anonymity, a police official said CMP detectives had arrested two drug peddlers -- Nurussafa alias Mamun, 37, and Saiful alias Shakil -- with 3,000 yaba pills in Agrabad on March 31.

During interrogation, the duo confessed that they were taking the tablets to Kamruzzaman.

The same day, a case was filed against the two arrestees and the constable with Double Mooring Police Station.

Amena said, “We arrested him [Kamruzzaman] as we found his involvement in the incident. Necessary actions will be taken against him.”

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has ordered the deputy commissioner of Mirpur division to investigate an allegation that a case statement showed fewer number of yaba pills than what were actually seized in a drive.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ziarul Islam passed the order on Sunday to probe the allegation against Pallabi Police Station OC Dadon Fakir and Sub-inspector Kawsar Sultan, said court sources.

It also ordered the Mirpur DC to submit his report by one and a half months.

On March 19, the court issued a show-cause notice to the OC and the SI to give their statements after appearing before the court.

On March 14, a Bangla daily published a report saying that Pallabi police conducted a drive in Madrasa camp area on March 12 and “detained four people with around 5,000 yaba pills”. But in the case statement, police showed that only 75 yaba pills were seized from them. Two of the detainees were released later, the report said.

“Such unlawful activities give a bad impression about police. It needs a proper investigation whether there was any negligence from the two police officials,” said the court order.

Contacted, Mirpur DC Masud Ahmed told The Daily Star yesterday that he was yet to get the copy of the court order.

“An internal investigation is going on,” he added.
