Three cheers for the terrific trio
Mahin Ar-Rahman could be defined as a persistent achiever. He has been a brilliant student since his early school life.
In continuation of his outstanding feats, he scored 90 plus marks in 11 subjects in O-level, and six grade As, including four A*, in A-level to become the country's top A achiever in 2015-16.
“It was possible mostly because of my parents,” said Mahin of Mangrove School after receiving an award at yesterday's O- and A-Level Awards Presentation Ceremony.
The Daily Star awarded 1,901 top achievers in O- and A-level exams for the 18th year under the slogan “Saluting the Nation Builders of Tomorrow” at the capital's Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium.
Mahin said he was born in a family that offered him a congenial academic environment. His father Mokhlesur Rahman graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and his mother Nayar Sultana Rahman from Dhaka University.
He mentioned that his two brothers have also been outstanding performers as students, and are now studying engineering at a Canadian university.
Mahin said he has always got great support and inspiration from his teachers.
He further said he was not taken to any coaching centre and his mother helped him with his studies.
Mahin recalled that when his father used to bring him home from school, he would tell him stories explaining why education was so great a priority.
He wishes to pursue higher studies in mechanical or aerospace engineering abroad and then return home.
“I want to revolutionise the automotive or the aerospace industry in Bangladesh.”
He also had a piece of advice for his juniors. “Wherever we go, it is our duty to make sure we do our best.
Sanjana Namreen, who achieved 15 grade As with 12 A* in O-level from Sunshine Grammar School in Chittagong, talked about her two brothers, who did PhDs in aerospace engineering from Cambridge University, and are glaring examples for her to follow.
She has other role models -- her mother and her school's principal.
Sanjana's mother, who runs a hospital and a school for the poor, taught her the value of charity. And the principal of her school, Safia Ghazi Rahman, inspired her to love and care for others.
“I am also grateful to my father for ingraining in me the discipline that is inseparable from my ambitions.”
Inspired by her idol Marie Curie's words, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood”, Sanjana took 15 subjects in O-level and achieved remarkable results.
She now dreams of studying astronomy and chemistry of exoplanets.
“But no matter where I go, I will always remember to serve my nation with the utmost dedication and love,” Sanjana said in her speech at the ceremony.
Mohammed Mohaimen, who achieved 13 grade As with 10 A* in one sitting in O-level from Mastermind English Medium School, thanked the Almighty, his parents and his teachers for the achievement.
Mohaimen said the academic achievement was significant, but more important to him is courage as well as persistence and patience.
“So I will urge you people to shift your focus from gathering certificates to developing yourself …,” he added.
