SC Bar Polls: BNP-backed lawyers take 8 of 14 posts
Pro-BNP lawyers have won eight posts, including that of president and secretary, out of 14 posts of the annual Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election.
BNP leaders advocate Zainul Abedin and barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon have been elected SCBA president and secretary respectively.
Pro-Awami League lawyers have obtained the rest six posts, including that of treasurer and a vice-president.
The results of the election were announced yesterday morning after the two-day voting of SCBA election ended on Thursday. Some 3,928 lawyers out of 5,081 cast their votes at the SCBA auditorium in the capital.
Two elected vice-presidents are pro-BNP lawyer Umme Kulsum Begum Rekha and pro-AL lawyer Mohammad Ozi Ullah.
Rafiqul Islam Hiru has become the treasurer, while two assistant secretaries are pro-BNP lawyer Shamima Sultana Dipti and pro-AL lawyer Shafiqul Islam.
The elected pro-BNP executive members are SK Tahsin Ali, Ayesha Akter, Hasibur Rahman and Mausumi Akter and the pro-AL lawyers are Habibur Rahman Habib, ABM Noor A Alam Uzzal and Cumar Debul Dey.
In last year's SCBA election, pro-AL lawyers won eight posts, including that of president, out of 14 posts and pro-BNP lawyers secured six posts, including that of secretary.
