'Robbery Attempt': Mob beats two men to death

Two young men were killed by a mob after they allegedly attempted to rob a house in a village of Narayanganj's Bandar upazila early yesterday.

Locals of Baligaon villagers claimed that the dead men were active members of a gang of robbers.

Police later recovered the bodies and sent them to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy.

Quoting locals, Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam said a gang of 10-12 masked robbers attacked the house of one Rafique Munshi around 3:00am. They held the family members at gunpoint and assaulted them. Hearing the screams of the victims, the neighbours alerted the rest of the village using the loudspeaker at the local mosque and surrounded the house.

When the villagers tried to catch the robbers, a struggle between them ensued. Two robbers were beaten to death. The other members of the gang managed to flee. Six villagers were also injured.

The officer-in-charge of the local police station said the identity of the two dead men could not be known yet. They are suspected to be aged between 25-28.

The injured villagers are Didar, 30, son of Rafique Munshi, Nazrul, 32, Manzur Hossain, 27, son of Lokman Bepari, Jahangir Hossain, 38, son of Hafizuddin, Zakir Hossain, 54, and Umme Habiba, 19, son and daughter of Sirajul Islam. They have been admitted into Bandar Upazila Health complex.

The hunt for the rest of the robbers is underway, the police said.
