A priest from Natore was rescued in Sylhet yesterday, nearly five days after his “abduction” apparently for a ransom.

Bimal Rozario, elder brother of Father Walter William Rozario, claimed that his brother somehow managed to flee and ran to safety yesterday.

Bimal added that Walter contacted their younger brother Amal Rozario over phone from in front of a bus counter of Sylhet's South Surma upazila.

Police then rescued Walter from that place, he said.

An official of Sylhet Metropolitan Police said the Police Headquarters in Dhaka would brief journalists on the incident.

Biblop Bijoy Talukdar, superintendent of Natore police, said a joint team from Natore and Sylhet rescued Father Walter in Surma upazila yesterday afternoon.

Father Walter, 40, an assistant parish priest of Bornimariabad Catholic Church in Baraigram, went missing on Monday afternoon.

On Wednesday, his family members said unidentified criminals demanded Tk 3 lakh as ransom over phone for his release.

A general diary was filed with Baraigram police and law enforcers were trying to trace him.

The priest is a neighbour of slain Christian trader Sunil Gomez.
