UP member rapes woman in Joypurhat
Police yesterday arrested two men, including a union parishad member, for allegedly gang-raping a woman in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat on Monday.
The arrestees are Shahabul Islam, 42, member of ward-3, Dharanji Union Parishad, and his cohort Dudu Mia, 32, of Uttar Baniapara village in Joypurhat Sadar.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. According to the case statement, the victim, a former readymade garment worker by profession, contacted UP member Shahabul with the hope of recovering around Tk 1.5 lakh which she lost to a fraud.
On information, the UP member asked her to visit his village and then took her to an isolated place. There, he, along with his cohort, gang-raped her and forced her to leave the place.
The victim then went to Panchbibi Police Station and filed a case. She was then sent to Joypurhat Modern Hospital for medical tests, said Polash Chandra Deb, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station.
Meanwhile, the arrestees were sent to jail via a district court.
