Maj Sinha Killing: 3 witnesses in cops’ case on fresh remand
A Cox's Bazar court yesterday granted a fresh four-day remand for three Marishbunia village residents, who were arrested in a case filed by Sharmen Shahria Ferdush over the killing of her brother Maj (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan in police firing.
The three -- Nurul Amin, Nizam Uddin and Ayas Uddin – were also named as witnesses in a case filed by Sub-inspector Nandadulal Rakshit with Teknaf Police Station over the same incident. Nandadulal is one of the three prime accused in the case filed by Sinha's sister and is currently on remand.
Rab produced the three before the Cox's Bazar court seeking seven days' remand for each of them.
Judge Tamanna Farah of Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-4 granted four days of remand. She passed the order around 12:15pm, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Khairul Islam.
The accused had earlier completed seven days in remand on August 20, before being produced before the court with the fresh remand prayer, said Khairul, also a Rab-15 official and the investigation officer of the case.
The three were sent back to jail and Rab will interrogate them at a later date, when convenient, Khairul added.
On August 9, a Rab team arrested the three from Marishbunia village for their alleged involvement in Sinha's killing.
Later, they were produced before a court with a 10-day remand prayer on August 10 and the court granted a seven-day remand on August 12. Rab took the three into custody on August 14.
"We have placed the arrestees in court seeking [the fresh] remand as we need to verify the information we got during their interrogation," said Khairul.
Maj (retd) Sinha, 36, had been making travel documentaries for a YouTube channel called "Just Go". On July 31, he was returning to Cox's Bazar from Teknaf, when his car was stopped at a police checkpost at Shaplapur on Marine Drive.
Police claimed Sinha aimed his pistol at them when they wanted to search the vehicle, prompting them to shoot in self-defence. They also said they seized drugs from the vehicle.
However, witnesses said Sinha exited his car, put his hands over his head and then police shot him. His family members alleged he was murdered in cold blood.
On Monday, Rab took the three prime accused of the case -- former officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station Pradeep Kumar Das, in-charge of Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre Inspector Liaqat Ali and Sub-Inspector Nandadulal -- into their custody on a four-day remand for interrogation.
Four other arrestees -- Assistant sub-inspector Liton Miah, Constable Safaul Karim, Kamal Hossain and Abdullah Al Mamun -- were also placed on four days' remand on Monday, but are now in jail as Rab will interrogate them later.
A source said investigators would eventually bring all the accused face to face and match the information they are providing during their remand.
