Khaleda’s condition stable

The health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who recovered from Covid-19 earlier this month, is stable although fluid is still being extracted from her lungs.
The 10-member medical board formed to treat her reviewed the former premier's health condition yesterday at 2:30pm, said AZM Zahid Hossain, Khaleda's personal physician.
"Around 390ml fluid was extracted in the last 24 hours from her [Khaleda's] lungs. Earlier, it was 600ml," Zahid said.
Family members had applied to the home ministry to take her abroad but the government ruled out the plea citing legal grounds.
On April 28, a 10-member medical board, headed by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder, was formed to oversee her treatment.
Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27, three days after her second positive test for Covid-19. She first tested positive on April 11.
On May 3, she was taken to the hospital's Coronary Care Unit with breathing difficulties.
In the third Covid-19 test on May 9, she tested negative.
She also has arthritis, diabetes and eye problems.
The government released Khaleda from jail on March 25 last year, suspending the sentence as per section 401 (1) of the Criminal Code of Procedure.
The suspension was later extended twice.
The BNP chairperson landed in jail on February 8, 2018, after a special court sentenced her to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. On October 30, 2018, the High Court raised her punishment to 10 years.
